When it comes to home protection, a lot of people in Texas like to think that they won’t need much more than a rifle. That may be the case for some, but investing in one of our storm shelters or safe rooms is certainly a more secure option.
Disaster Strikes the Lonestar State
Residents in northern Texas were in for a cruel surprise following Christmas Day in 2015. A disastrous storm front spawned deadly tornadoes and ripped through Dallas County and Rockwall County, killing 13 people and causing millions in damage. As a result, many residents are deciding to take the necessary precautions and invest in a safe room or storm shelter.
As many people know, Texas is a part of what many Americans like to call “Tornado Alley”. This section of the midwest is extremely prone to deadly tornadoes due to the topography of the region combined with the local weather patterns. States including Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois, and Iowa see more tornadoes on average than most other parts of the country. With that in mind, you might think that many midwestern residents would invest in some sort of safe room or storm shelter to protect their family from the risk of severe weather.
However, the deadly storm at the end of 2015 proved that the region has a long way to go in regards to storm security and protection.
Storm Shelters Save Lives
For instance, take this report from the Dallas News into consideration. According to the story, Rockwall County issued only two storm shelter permits from 2011 through 2015. However, since the start of 2016, they have already issued nine permits to construct these storm shelters and other protective structures.
Rowlett has also seen similar growth. In the six months prior to the 2015 storms, the area issued only one permit. Since then, they have approved an incredible 24 building permits for storm shelters.
One of the biggest reasons behind these permits, aside from promoting structures that will protect residents from deadly storms, is to have an official record for search and rescue operations. If officials know where to find a storm shelter or safe room, they can use that information after a storm to look for trapped survivors and identify areas that may need immediate assistance.
